Javik entered the sewage room, took one look at that motherfucker holding Athy’s arms, trying to pull her into that filthy tunnel, and he just about lost his shit over it.

Kill him. He would fucking kill him for this. He stepped forward, stopped only because Novik’s hand clamped down hard on to his shoulder, holding him back, and because of the knife that came out of nowhere and pointed right at Athy’s throat.

“One more move and I’ll slice her right here.”

Javik stopped all right. He didn’t know this man. The only things he did know were monstrous and horrible, and that he supposedly loved Athy.

But many men destroyed things they claimed to love.

Athy’s amber eyes were wide and terrified. They remained locked onto Javik.

So long as she could see him, then perhaps that would be enough. Hopefully that was all she would need to be comforted on what was happening until he could get to her.

I’m coming, baby. Don’t you worry.

“Let her go, and I will consider letting you live,” Javik said.

David guffawed at him. “You’ll consider letting me live? Why is it that I am unafraid?”

“You should be very afraid, sir,” Javik said. “You stomped on my head not too long ago, and now you’re here trying to take what doesn’t belong to you.”

David frowned for a brief second before his eyes widened. He just realized the truth. “You…”

“Yeah, me, now let her go. Take your men, and get out of here. This is your last warning.”

“And if I decide not to? If I decided to just kill her?”

“Then you’re dead anyway,” Javik said. Please, for the love of God, don’t let him actually kill her, though.

David snarled at him. “Fucking thieves and cowards, the lot of you. No honor in any of you!”

Javik had to bite his tongue on that one. He wanted to point out to the dickhead that he didn’t have much room to be belligerent about that, to accuse Javik of having no honor when David was the one who’d forced Athy to marry him against her will.

He was still holding her, however, and that knife. For the moment, it was best to not piss him off too much. He might do something everyone would regret.

“Got nothing to say? Coward! You’re just a fucking coward! This is my wife! I don’t care about what you dragons do with the rest of the scum you take, but I’m taking my wife home with me.”

David backed up toward the tunnel with his men following him, but something in Athy’s eyes changed.

Javik saw it a moment before she did it.

“No!” she screamed. Athy slammed her elbow into David’s stomach, a move that was familiar to her now that Javik had taught it to her.

David doubled over at the unexpected strike. Athy started to run to Javik, and he went to her.

One of David’s men threw a knife. Javick watched it fly in slow motion as he ran to her, the blade and handle spinning toward their target, but he couldn’t go fast enough.
